Coaching Staff


Steve Staker
Head Coach/Linebackers

 
Staker was named head coach of the Kohawks in March of 2008. Staker, the father of five Coe alumni, has been an integral part of the Kohawk football staff for four years, serving as defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. Prior to arriving at Coe, Staker spent 35 years as head football coach at Fredericksburg (Iowa) High School.

While at Fredericksburg, Staker also served as head baseball coach for 31 years, head boys' track coach for 28 years and assistant boys' basketball coach for 36 years. He served as the high school and middle school athletics director at Fredericksburg for 31 years. His football team won a state championship in 2001, while his track and field team won the state title in 1992. During a 15-year span, his team won six district titles. He was named to the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994 and was the Class A Coach of the Year in 2001. In 2003, he was the head coach for the Iowa Shrine Bowl.

Staker's son, Tyler, has served as a graduate assistant for the Kohawks the past two seasons and is now the offensive coordinator for Coe. Tyler is the last of five Staker children to attend the college. Steve's daughter, Shannon Cook, and daughter-in-law, Julie Staker, also work for the Coe Admission Office, while his son-in-law, Steve Cook, is the school's head baseball coach.


Larry Atwater
Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs

 
A 1982 graduate of Coe, he is the physical education department chairman and an assistant professor of physical education. Atwater wrestled and played football all four years in college and ran track for one year. In his senior year, Atwater threw for 1,615 yards and 16 touchdowns while posting a passing percentage of 53.7. Atwater received his master's degree from Northeast Missouri State and is married to Sue, a science teacher at Linn-Mar Middle School, in Marion. They have two sons, Jordan and Mark.
 


Tyler Staker
Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks


Staker is a 2006 graduate of Coe College with a degree in business. He was a four-year Letterman and a two time captain for the Kohawks, where he garnered all-conference honors his junior and senior year and was an all-west region defensive back as a senior.

A native of Fredericksburg, Iowa, Staker led the Falcons to a state high school football title in 2001 and was selected captain of the All-State team. As a senior at Coe, Staker represented the Kohawks and the Iowa Conference in the 2005 Aztec Bowl, pitting the top NCAA Division III players in the nation, in a 53-15 win over the top collegiate football players in Mexico.

After graduation Staker spent two seasons as a graduate assistant, where he coached the offensive line and wide receivers before he took over as offensive coordinator in 2008. In Staker's 3rd year as offensive coordinator, his 2010 offense led the IIAC in scoring offense (38 p.p.g.), total offense (469 y.p.g.), passing offense (282 y.p.g.), pass efficiency, first downs, third down conversions and red zone offense.

For the second year in a row, Staker's offense led the league in total yards and has produced the Iowa Conference MVP in quarterback Brad Boyle. Staker is married to Kristy Staker, a 2008 graduate of Coe College who serves as Coe's Public Relations Coordinator, Assistant Director of Parent Programs and Assistant Volleyball Coach at the college.


Jim Dostal
Special Teams/Defensive Line


Former Kohawk All-American Jim Dostal begins his second season as defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. Dostal, who played on the 1986 Kohawk team that made the NCAA Playoffs, was named a Third-Team All-American in his senior season. He helped the Kohawks to an 18-2-1 record in his two years at Coe and was an All-Midwest Conference selection both seasons. A highly successful high school coach, Dostal took his alma mater, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, on its deepest playoff run in over 20 years. Jim, who currently teaches at Jefferson, and wife Amber reside in Cedar Rapids.



Doug Brissey
Receivers/Punters/Kickers


Brissey, a 1994 Coe graduate, will begin his third year on the staff. Brissey was a three-year letterman for the Kohawks from 1991-1993. During his time at Coe, the Kohawks accumulated an overall record of 27-4, including two Midwest Conference championship teams. Brissey played in all 31 games during his three years and garnered second team all-conference honors as a junior punter and first team all-conference honors as a senior tight end. As a senior, Brissey led the Kohawks in receiving touchdowns with eight. Brissey and his wife Rachelle, a 1995 Coe Graduate, have two daughters, Madison and Makenna.
 


Andy TeKippe
Receivers

 
TeKippe, a 2008 graduate of Coe, begins his first year on the staff. He was a two-year starter for the Kohawks at quarterback, while missing eight games his junior year with an injury. TeKippe owns multiple records for Coe, including the most passing attempts in a single-game and most passing touchdowns with six against Cornell in 2005. He is the only quarterback in Coe history to complete more than 25 passes in two games.
